The 2011 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne Vieilles Vignes comes from 50+-year-old vines. A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Carignan aged in concrete and bottled unfiltered, this outstanding wine is a killer value. Aromas of black truffles, black currants, black cherries, lavender and roasted Provencal herbs jump from the glass of this full-bodied Cairanne. With great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, it finishes with an attractive opulence and roundness. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. Bravo!
Denis Alary, who runs one of the finest estates in Southern France, fashions a bevy of value-priced wines. His least pricy offerings include La Grange Daniel Blanc and La Grange Daniel Rouge. Although 2011 was not as great a vintage as 2009 and 2010 in the Southern Rhone, Alary has done well in 2011, and the upside is these wines are more evolved and ready to drink than their 2010 counterparts.
